If you are looking to extend your stay, head up north to the Sleeping Bear Dunes or Mackinac Island, or northwest to the Tunnel of Trees.
Sleeping Bear Dunes: Miles of sand beach, bluffs that tower 450’ above Lake Michigan, lush forests, clear inland lakes, and unique flora and fauna make up the natural world of Sleeping Bear Dunes. High dunes afford spectacular views across the lake. An island lighthouse, US Life-Saving Service stations, coastal villages, and picturesque farmsteads reflect the park’s rich maritime, agricultural, and recreational history.
Mackinac Island: The jewel of the Great Lakes. Mackinac Island State Park contains approximately 70.5 miles of trails and roads and is filled with historic attractions, including Fort Mackinac and a historic downtown area. Founded in 1780, Fort Mackinac is a walled cluster of military buildings on a coastal bluff.
The historic downtown area offers unique shopping and diverse dining. The Island affords visitors unforgettable sunsets and awe-inspiring sunrises. Cars are not allowed on the Island, so unless you plan to bike or take a carriage ride be sure to bring good walking/hiking shoes.
Tunnel of Trees: Located along the northwest border of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, the Tunnel of Trees is part of the M-119 state road that stretches from Cross Village to Harbor Springs. With Sturgeon Bay to the north and Little Traverse Bay to the south, the Tunnel of Trees runs along the coastal bluff of Lake Michigan. It is ranked one of the most scenic drives in the United States and the most iconic attraction in Michigan. If you are planning to drive the Tunnel of Trees, be sure to start with the 2022 Ultimate Guide to the Tunnel of Trees Michigan!
